What stays on your device

Everything Prism knows about you stays on your computer:

• Settings: your preferences, including a proxy address if you set one (stored as you type it, so don't put a password in it that you wouldn't keep in a text file).
• Queue and Library: the addresses, titles, thumbnails and file locations of what you download.
• Subscriptions: the channels and playlists you follow, and which entries have been seen.
• Log files: an application log and, when the player is used, a player log. Both can contain addresses and file locations, and both stay on your computer unless you choose to send them to someone.
• Allowed folders: download folders you picked in the folder dialog.

None of this is sent anywhere. You can delete it at any time by removing Prism's data folder, or with "Reset to Defaults" in Settings. A backup you export from Settings is a file on your computer; where it goes after that is up to you.

Network activity

Prism connects to the internet only for:

• Fetching the videos and files you add, or that a subscription you created has found, and checking those subscriptions' feeds.
• BitTorrent transfers you start. BitTorrent is peer-to-peer, so other people in a swarm can see your IP address. By default Prism also joins the DHT and asks your router to forward a port; both can be turned off in Settings, BitTorrent.
• Checking for app updates and, when you ask, updating the download engine, both from GitHub.
• Fetching a torrent IP blocklist, if you set one up.
• Crash reporting, if you turn it on (below).

If you set a proxy, video downloads and subscription checks go through it entirely. For torrents only the connections to other peers do: the DHT, trackers and port forwarding still use your real address. Settings says so next to the proxy field.

Crash reporting (off by default)

Settings, Diagnostics, Crash reporting sends a report to Sentry, an error-tracking service, when Prism crashes. It is off unless you turn it on. A report contains the error type and message, a stack trace of Prism's own code, the app version and your operating system. Before sending, Prism removes anything that looks like an address or a file location, attaches no console output, browsing trail or request data, and never includes your queue, Library or settings. Nothing is sent while it is off.

Clipboard

With clipboard link detection on (Settings, Notifications), Prism reads the clipboard when you switch back to it, to offer a one-click fetch of a video link it finds there. What it reads is never stored or sent. With the setting off, Prism reads the clipboard only when you use the tray's Paste & Download.

Browser cookies

If you choose a browser under Settings, Video, Browser cookies, the download engine reads that browser's cookies on your computer so videos that need a sign-in work. Those cookies go only to the site the video is on, as your browser would send them, and never to RainaCorp or anyone else.

Browser extension

The optional Prism Downloader extension for Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Chrome adds a toolbar button and a right-click menu. When you use one, it hands the address of that page or link to the Prism app on your computer, and Prism asks you to confirm before fetching anything.

The extension asks for one permission, to add its menu items. It collects no data: it makes no network requests of its own, stores nothing, and has no analytics or tracking.

Third parties

Prism talks directly to the sites and torrent swarms you choose, and their operators see those requests. App and engine updates come from GitHub. Crash reports, if you turn them on, go to Sentry. No other third party receives anything.

Changes to this policy

Changes update the date at the top of this page and ship with the app.
